GROUP PARTICIPANTS

Group participants responsibilities

The group leader should make sure that all participants:

  • aware of the school's Code of Conduct and understand the expected behaviour.
  • do not take unnecessary risks.
  • follow the instructions of the leader and other supervisors including those at the venue or excursion.
  • dress and behave sensibly and responsibility.

Participation

  • The group leader should ensure that the participants are capable of undertaking the proposed activity.
  • Group members should be encouraged to engage in activities and take on the challenges during activities, but should not be coerced into activities of which they have a genuine fear.
  • Participants whose behaviour is such that the group leader is concerned for their safety, or for that of others, should be withdrawn from the activity.

Information to participants

Languages United will provide the group leader with information, including risk assessments, on each activity. The group leader should decide how information is provided, but must ensure that the participants understand key safety information. For some young people it may be their first experience away from home on their own and in the close company of others.

Information to pass on to group members may include:

  • the aims and objectives of the excursion/activity.
  • the background information about the place to be visited.
  • basic English / foreign language words where appropriate.
  • relevant culture and customs.
  • how to avoid specific dangers and why they should follow rules.
  • why safety precautions are in place.
  • why special safety precautions are in place for anyone with disabilities.
  • what standard of behaviour is expected from participants.
  • appropriate and inappropriate personal and social conduct, including sexual activity.
  • who is responsible for the group.
  • what not to bring into the UK, such as drugs, knives etc.
  • what to do if approached by anyone from outside the group.
  • rendezvous procedures.
  • what to do if separated from the group.
  • emergency procedures.
